What To Know About A Tooth Extraction
At Today’s Dental Comfort, we are passionate about doing all we can to help our patients have excellent oral health. This is why we recommend that patients visit our office for routine oral hygiene examination appointments. The longer patients go between appointments, the greater the chance they will experience oral health complications. If we recommend a dental treatment and the patient delays scheduling it or avoids it altogether, the condition will worsen until it’s treated, possibly necessitating a tooth extraction.
What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is when the entire tooth structure, including the tooth root, is removed. We may need to extract a tooth for any number of reasons, including:
- Severe trauma to the mouth
- Irreparable damage or decay
- Complications from gum disease
- Overcrowding (preparation for orthodontic treatment)
- Wisdom teeth
Care Before and After an Extraction
We know patients can feel nervous or anxious before any dental treatment, and these feelings may be heightened when the treatment is a tooth extraction. We want to assure patients that a tooth extraction is a common procedure, and we will be sure to go over all the information and instructions prior to the appointment.
It is extremely important to follow our pre-treatment instructions to ensure that we are able to perform the treatment as expected. For example, we may recommend that a patient stop a specific medication before receiving treatment, while another patient may need to take an antibiotic before treatment for a medical condition. It is also important to follow our after-treatment instructions to prevent complications. In addition, we highly encourage our patients to listen to their bodies when it comes to pain relief and avoid pushing themselves to eat or do something too soon after treatment.
We are always here to answer any questions or concerns you may have before and after treatment. If you have not recently been to see us for a hygiene visit and dental exam, please contact our office, which is located in Burton, MI, to schedule your next appointment.
